Wilson: Play with confidence from start

7th March 2016

Head Coach Danny Wilson admitted Cardiff Blues must strive to play with 'accuracy and confidence' from the start of games - after a dramatic late show salvaged a losing bonus point against champions Glasgow Warriors.

Cardiff Blues scored three tries in the final ten minutes of a pulsating Guinness Pro12 encounter at the Scotstoun Stadium.

Dan Fish, Ellis Jenkins and Macauley Cook all scored – the final two tries incredibly coming in the 79th and 84th minute - as Cardiff Blues battled back from 27-8 to 27-20 in quick-fire fashion to snatch a point.

Wilson was understandably delighted with the fighting spirit on show in Scotland on a difficult playing surface.

But, after a game of two very contrasting halves, he insisted his team must find a way to start games better and not just battling back in adversity.

“At half-time we went into the dressing room disappointed and angry at how we had played,” he said.

“There was a lack of accuracy, lack of speed to our game. But we put that right second half and the last 20 or 25 minutes was very good and, once again, our bench made a big impact.

“Credit to the players for showing that fighting spirit, we’ve done it all season long and we finished the game really strongly with a lot of youngsters on the field.

“We had two Wales Under-20 players come on, in Corey Domachowski and Harri Millard, who have only trained once properly with us.

“We managed to score a couple of good late tries, but the disappointing factor is the first half.

“The first half was so inaccurate, we didn’t get anything going and it was the poorest half of rugby we have produced for some time.”

Wilson conceded his team could have been even further behind than 20-0 at the break – with home centre Mark Bennett inexplicably dropping the ball when he only had to ground it unopposed to score.

And, despite a thrilling and unforgettable late comeback, he admitted things had to change because it was becoming an all too familiar story.

“We showed the spirit in this group, but gave ourselves too much to do,” he added. “I feel like it is something I have said a few times this season, especially away from home.

“We are finishing games very strongly. But we are too often clawing back points we conceded early in the game.

“We have got to bring confidence and accuracy to the start of games. It’s almost like we need to be behind to get going and that has to stop.

“I am pleased with the way we finished the game and what we got out of the game when it had looked at half-time like we might be on the end of a hiding.

“I felt we owned the second half, you haven’t seen much of Glasgow down our end bar the lineout try they scored. We looked far more in control and got some tempo into the game.”
