We only need minor improvements to return to winning ways - Turnbull

First Team News | 4th November 2020

Josh Turnbull insists Cardiff Blues only need to focus on minor improvements as they look to bounce back from Monday’s defeat to Ulster.

John Mulvihill’s side travel to the Scottish capital next week to face Richard Cockerill’s Edinburgh, who sit four points behind Wales’ Capital Region in Conference B.

The Wales international returned to action against the Belfast action, having completed his suspension after a red card against Zebre on the opening day of Guinness PRO14 action. The utility forward impressed with a team-high 21 tackles completed in a valiant defensive effort.

Turnbull admits his side must improve their discipline if they are to relieve defensive pressure, but is confident his side can be efficient on the training ground.

“It’s hard when a side like Ulster parks up on the try-line for long periods of time, especially if you look back at the 17 minutes at the end of the first half,” said the 32 year old.

“It sucks the energy out of us, and we were unable to regain the possession. When we did win the ball back, the referee would come back for a penalty to them.

“That can be tough, and it’s our fault for giving away too many penalties in our own half.

“Too much pressure is built and that’s when it gets tough.

“It comes down to simple things that we can work on during the week, and discipline in our own half is one of those things.

“If we sort that out, we won’t be giving sides like Ulster an opportunity to set up camp on the try line.”

With international call-ups affecting both sides, Turnbull is under no illusions about the challenge at BT Murrayfield but is confident his side can make their mark in attack.

The 10-times capped international: “Edinburgh have lost a lot of players to the national side, but they’ll still be a tough team to face.

“Last season, we came away with a point from Edinburgh. It was a tough game and we need to change our tactics.

“They kick a lot, they have a strong driving line-out and those are the things we’ll have to look at during the week.

“But you look at our last two games and it’s those little details that we can change. If we manage that we’ll be in a better place.

“We want to keep the ball in the right areas of the field because we’ve shown that we have the ability to cause problems for any side in the Championship.”
