Under-16s impress with victories

19th February 2016

Cardiff Blues South and North Under-16s both turned on the style this week to run in 11 tries between them as they defeated Scarlets and Ospreys on home soil.

A brace of tries from prop Joe Melhuish and flanker Fergus Hodgson saw Cardiff Blues South Under-16s fight-back to stun Ospreys West Under-16s in the Regional Age Grade Championship at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on Tuesday night.

The visitors had taken an early lead in the nine-try cracker, with a score from full back Iwan Richards, before centre Max Cunnington hit back with a converted try to level the scores on 17 minutes.

Captain Jay Jones – fresh from his four-try heroics the week earlier – went over on 20 minutes while Ospreys cut the lead to 14-12 at the interval with a try from wing Harry Evans.

A try from Sean Collins put Ospreys back ahead three minutes into the second period, but after that the second half saw Cardiff Blues take control with 24 unanswered points.

Melhuish and Hodgson both grabbed a try double while fly half Bevan Howells converted two to cement the win.

Cardiff Blues North Under 16s produced a power packed performance to defeat Scarlets East Under-16s at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on Wednesday evening.

The lead was extended to 26-0 in the second half with further tries from wing George Thomas and flanker Connor Dixon.

Scarlets rallied with a penalty try and score from full back Harri Doel with Blues a man down to a yellow card.

But the final word went to replacement full back Logan Lagier as Cardiff Blues ran out convincing winners.
