Team cohesion and hard work the key to Cardiff Blues' success - Smith

Garyn Smith believes team cohesion and hard work has been key to Cardiff Blues' success this season.

The academy graduate was introduced early in the Blues’ Challenge Cup final victory in Bilbao on Friday, slotting in an unfamiliar position on the wing, after Owen Lane was forced off early with injury.

Smith went on to touch down for a crucial second half try, before winning the turnover that would allow Anscombe to convert the match-winning penalty.

The 22-year-old is delighted to be part of a close-knit squad, and was proud to see his side bounce back from a 20-6 half time deficit.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling. The boys can’t get over it. It’s led to this after the hard work the boys have been throughout the season and we’re so pleased,” said the centre.

“It all came down to a team effort at the end of the day, and as always, the boys worked hard for each other, which is something we’ve shown all season. I was just happy to get the try and being able to help out in the end.

“We had a little bit of a rocky start to the season, but we’ve hit form from around Christmas time and carried that the whole way through.

“We’ll look to build on this going into next season, and we’ve managed to keep the majority of the team over the last three years.

“We’re a close knit team, but are looking forward to a bit of time off now before getting back for pre-season where we will work hard to compete in the Champions Cup and to keep our place in that competition.

“Gloucester caught us on the back foot a little bit during that first half because we didn’t think they’d kick as much as they did. We expected them to run from everywhere.

“At half time we changed and decided to try to keep the ball a little bit more, because we gave up the ball too easy during that first half. When we did retain possession, we managed to cause some damage.”
