Sherratt expects more to come

20th June 2017

Matt Sherratt insists there is more to come from Wales ahead of their summer tour clash with Samoa on Friday.

The Cardiff Blues backs and attack coach is currently assisting Robin McBryde during the international set-up’s summer schedule.

They kicked-off with a 24-6 victory over Tonga, in which a number of Cardiff Blues players starred, and they now take on Samoa in Apia.

Sherratt said: “We were glad to get the win. It wasn’t a fantastic performance, but a typical first performance.

“Much like Manu Samoa’s vs the All Blacks, it was one of those games when you are going to make mistakes, I imagine both sides will be better prepared this week.”

Sherratt knows plenty about some of Samoa’s stars from his time coaching at Worcester Warriors and Bristol, and of course Rey Lee-Lo from Cardiff Blues and he expects a stern Test.

Wales have been weakened after four players were called up by the British and Irish Lions but Sherratt believes the emphasis of the tour must be on developing players.

He added: “I’ve coached four or five of the Samoa players – Jack Lam and David Lemi at Bristol.

We want to get two things out of this tour, we want to win obviously, but we also wanted to blood some youngsters and losing those players is going to hit the team a little bit because they were leaders, but it gives those players an opportunity to play against one of the best teams in the world.”
