Red hot Summerhill disappointed with defeat

First Team News | 6th April 2019

Aled Summerhill was pleased to bag a try on his 50thCardiff Blues appearance but he would have swapped it all for a Guinness PRO14 victory over Munster.

Summerhill continued his red-hot streak as he crossed in Cork for his eighth try in seven games. The Blues led early in the second half but were unable to close the game out as Munster called on their big guns and displayed their European credentials.

Summerhill was disappointed to leave Irish Independent Park empty handed but could not hide his pride after reaching a half century of appearances for his home region.

He said: “It’s my home region so it was an honour to get 50 caps. It was a proud moment leading the team out, Dacey said before the game that I could lead the team out so that was nice but it’s disappointing not to get the result on my 50thand we look forward to next week.

“The first half went quite well, it was close at half-time but in the last 20 minutes they were clinical and showed what they can do. It was a disappointing result in the end. We gave it our best shot but we weren’t quite good enough.”

Guinness PRO14 rivals Connacht now have the opportunity to steal a march on the Blues with a clash against Zebre on Saturday but the two sides meet in Galway next week.

It will be a do or die encounter at the Sportsground to set up a thrilling finale to the Conference A fixtures and Summerhill is relishing the challenge.

He continued: “Everyone knows that’s a massive game. We’re confident we can go out there and get a result and we’ll go in on Monday and work hard in preparation.”

Despite the disappointing defeat, Wales’ Capital Region continued to thrill with ball in hand. Summerhill and his wing partner Owen Lane have now racked up a combined 15 tries in eight games.

The duo are tied n 10 tries apiece this season with Rey Lee-Lo hot on their heels with nine touchdowns.

Following a number of seasons punctuated by injuries, Summerhill has been thrilled with not only his personal form but the brand of high-tempo, attacking rugby Cardiff Blues are playing.

And he is looking forward to the competition for places next season when new signings Josh Adams and Hallam Amos arrive at the Arms Park.

From the sent piece Rey went through and gave it to Tomos, I was on the end of one as well. I just remember getting the ball and running down the line, I saw Tom inside and went to pass him the ball but dummied it and scored.

He added: “I love the style of rugby we play here at Cardiff Blues and we’re lucky, myself, Owen and the other wings to be on the end of some tries. That’s your job as a week so it’s always nice but it’s nicer to get the result.

“That’s the rugby we like to play, we like a fast game and we’ll look to do that next week as well.

“It’s great looking ahead to next season. They are two class players and I have played with them a few times growing up. They are good boys and we will all push each other, hopefully bring the best out of each other and get some more results.”
