Navidi called into British and Irish Lions squad

First Team News | 26th June 2021

Josh Navidi has been called into the British and Irish Lions squad this evening, becoming the second Cardiff Blues player involved in this year's tour to South Africa.

The back row star, who graduated from the academy and has won 28 international caps to date, joins Cardiff team-mate Josh Adams in Warren Gatland's squad, as they prepare to depart for South Africa tomorrow.

Navidi was called into the set-up alongside lock Adam Beard, replacing Ospreys duo Alun Wyn Jones and Justin Tipuric, who suffered shoulder injuries in the Vodafone Lions 1888 Cup encounter against Japan on Saturday.

The Wales duo link up with the squad tomorrow alongside Exeter Chiefs' Luke Cowan-Dickie, Stuart Hogg, Jonny Hill and Sam Simmonds, who competed in the Gallagher Premiership final on Saturday. Munster scrum half Conor Murray will take over from Jones as tour captain.

Everyone at Cardiff Blues send their best wishes to both Alun Wyn Jones and Justin Tipuric following their injuries.

“We’re all incredibly disappointed for Alun Wyn and Justin,” said Lions Head Coach, Gatland.

“The timing of these injuries seem particularly cruel given we fly to South Africa tomorrow, but unfortunately they’re part of the game.

“Alun Wyn will obviously be a big loss, both on and off the field, but will be ably replaced by Conor.

“Conor is an outstanding rugby player and is held in the highest regard with both the players and coaches. As a three-time Lions tourist, he knows what will be required as captain and I am certain he will lead the squad with excellence. He will also be well supported by an experienced leadership group.

“We plan for Adam and Josh to join up with the touring party before we depart for South Africa tomorrow evening.”
