Jenkins targets Ospreys scalp

27th April 2016

Gethin Jenkins is relishing the opportunity to claim a long-awaited win against the Ospreys at Judgement Day IV.

Cardiff Blues are still fighting for a top six finish in the Guinness PRO12 and take on their great rivals at the Principality Stadium on Saturday.

Wales’ Capital Region have lost their last nine league encounters against the Swansea-based region but Jenkins knows they must end their five year wait for a victory to keep their league hopes alive.

He said: “It’s been a while since we beat them. It’s something we need to try and reverse.

“They are a great team, they’ve done well for the last five or six years and they are always our biggest competitors in Wales I suppose. We know it’s one of the biggest games for us.”

Danny Wilson’s men have made plenty of progress in 2016 and have given themselves a fighting chance of dining at the top table of European rugby with four consecutive league wins.

They are in a three-way battle with Munster and Edinburgh for a spot in the Champions Cup and must beat the Ospreys and the Scottish capital outfit to stand a chance.

But Jenkins, who is in his 11th season at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park, is optimistic and is enjoying the fast-flowing rugby the Blues are currently playing.

He continued: “At one stage I suppose we were just looking to finish above the Dragons, but things have moved on a little bit,” said Jenkins.

“We have gradually got better and better as the season has gone on.

“We had a bit of momentum in the last few weeks and we are looking to build on that for the last two games.

“We know how much of a challenge it is going to be, but we have improved week on week and we have got of a settled team at the moment.

“We have had some decent results in recent weeks and we actually try and play. We’ve also put a lot of emphasis on defence the last six weeks and it has had a good effect.

“We’ve scored some good tries off turnovers. With the attacking backs we have got, with Gareth Anscombe, Rey Lee Lo and the players out wide, it helps when you’ve got boys to win that ball for them.

“The more we do without the ball, the more challenging we are to teams.”
