Jamie Roberts suffers fractured skull

30th November 2008

Victory for Wales against Australia came at a cost as Jamie Roberts was taken to hospital with a fractured skull.

Roberts, a trainee doctor, suffered the injury in a sickening third minute collision with Australian captain Stirling Mortlock, who was helped off the field immediately after the incident. But the Wales centre amazingly carried on for 15 minutes after the clash before being helped off and taken to hospital, where he was kept under observation overnight as a precaution.

But the 22-year-old, who is expected to be ruled out for a minimum of six weeks, still managed to text congratulations to his team-mates after the game. And his bravery was hailed by his Wales captain Ryan Jones who said: “It was a hell of a collision. It’s a testimony to his character as an individual that he shrugged it off and carried on."

Nick Robinson also picked up an injury on Friday night playing against Glasgow at Firhill, amd was replaced early-on.
