A Cardiff runner was given a hero's welcome as he completed an epic fundraising challenge of six marathons in six days by crossing the line at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park - after being inspired by his son's bravery throughout his tough cancer battle.
Oscar Rudolf had only just turned five when doctors discovered a cancerous tumour in his pelvis, which was later diagnosed as a soft tissue Ewing's sarcoma. Since April last year, brave Oscar has endured countless blood transfusions, bouts of chemotherapy and pioneering radiotherapy.
His dad, James Rudolf from Lisvane, decided to give something back to the charity which helped fund his son’s treatment – by running six marathons in just six days.
All the money the 41-year-old raised went towards the children’s cancer charity Latch and James started his challenge with the London Marathon on Sunday (April 26) before completing five continuous days of running from the English capital to Cardiff – approximately 32 miles each day.
Cardiff Blues helped James get ready for his marathon challenge by offering the services of John Miles, Head of Medical Services, and Paul Downes, Head of Strength & Conditioning, during training.
And his epic marathon challenge finished at the home of Cardiff Blues on Friday (May 1) when he was met by supporters and first team stars Jarrad Hoeata and Filo Paulo.
“It's hard to put into words how I'm feeling now. It's been a great week, I've really enjoyed it,” said James after completing his challenge.
"It's been really hard work, but to see everyone here is amazing. It's great to be back with Sarah, my wife, Oscar and our other three boys, I'm very happy."
The original fundraising target set by James was £10,000. He has now raised more than £65,000 for Latch.
