Hammer excited by real energy at Blues

4th December 2014

Director of Rugby Mark Hammett has spoken about the 'real energy' in the squad as Cardiff Blues kick-off a big month with a mouth-watering European clash with London Irish this Saturday at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park (kick-off 3.15pm).

Blues face a double-header with London Irish in the European Rugby Challenge Cup over the next two weekends before derby days with Scarlets and Dragons over the festive period.

Hammer acknowledges it is a ‘big month’ for the region – but insists the focus is purely on then big home clash with London Irish, with both sides fully aware of the importance of the first fixture.

“It’s a big month and there is a real energy and lift in how we have been as a squad,” he said.

“We want momentum through December and we have got to action that. That starts in the week with what we do; how we prepare and get in the right mental state for the physical battle that is coming and then deliver

“You always hope that playing at home first is an advantage,” he added. “Playing at home, though, doesn’t just get the job done.

“You’ve got to perform with passion and line speed, get from A to B quickly and do your job. We need clarity on that and that is absolutely critical because the atmosphere can really add and enhance your performance. Playing at home is something we relish.”

Reflecting on the win over Treviso, Hammer added: “We did some things really well on Friday night against the Italians.

“However, we are still leaking too many points. I feel, to date, we are scoring enough points in most games to win matches, but at times we give too many out.

“We’ve got to keep focussing on our structures and systems in defence and make sure individuals make their tackles.”
