Five-star Cardiff Blues U18s defeat Ospreys

6th January 2016

Five-star Cardiff Blues Under-18s maintained their unbeaten start to the Regional Age Grade Championship this season as they defeated Ospreys Under-18s 39-12 at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park.

Declan Williams, Ben Thomas, Aled Ward, Ben Jones and Tom Mably grabbed the tries as the home side produced a clinical second half display to wrap up the win.

It was the visitors who missed the chance to take an eighth minute lead as a penalty from fly half Cai Evans drifted wide left of the posts.

Centre Declan Williams made them pay as he carved a huge hole in the Ospreys defensive line on halfway, tore up field and then stepped the full back to score a superb solo try.

Wing Aaron Clark stopped what looked a certain Ospreys score as he reacted well to a cross field kick and cruel bounce before visiting hooker Jordan Liney almost bulldozed over in the corner.

Ospreys finally hit back with a long range intercept score and the touchline conversion drew the teams level after 25 minutes.

Period of pressure saw Cardiff Blues keep the phases going, after a break from Connor Jones, and Ben Thomas slotted the penalty to re-take the lead as the half ended 10-7.

Neat work at the breakdown by Sion Edwards at the start of the second half forced an early penalty and Thomas slotted the kick.

A second home try of the night arrived on 47 minutes as Shane Lewis-Hughes offloaded in the tackle and sent Sion Jones away. Several phases laer a neat step from playmaker Thomas and he dotted down for a 20-7 lead.

Sion Edwards and Cameron Lewis both sent close to adding another home try before the dam broke from a driving maul and Number Eight Aled Ward touched down for a 27-7 lead.

Ospreys worked a neat try in the corner to cut the lead, but within two minutes a fourth home try arrived as captain Callum Bradbury burst down the middle and quick ball was picked up by Ben Jones to score for 34-12.

Another driving maul set up Tom Mably to score and even a late yellow card could not deny the home side on a night when the next generation of stars shone brightly.
