DS Smith tackle COVID-19 with new hygienic packaging

Corporate | 31st March 2020

Long-standing commercial partner DS Smith have hit the headlines this week after developing all-new hygienic boxes to deliver vital provisions and medicines during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The fibre-based packaging company have been a sponsor of Cardiff Blues for the last decade, turning us green in 2014 and helping us develop a number of environmental policies, procedures and initiatives.

Now the company, whose recycling headquarters are in Caerphilly, have turned their attention to the fight against Coronavirus.

With lockdown measures in place and many people completely self-isolating, DS Smith have launched a new packaging solution to comply with government regulations and provide a safer delivery system.

The stack, drop and go boxes are easily assembled and can be left on doorsteps to comply with social distancing before being recycled through normal household recycling routes.

Commenting on the new boxes, Stefano Rossi, CEO of Packaging at DS Smith said: “We were approached by several of our food supply customers to design a new packaging solution that would maximise efficiency and provide everyday essentials to many of society’s most vulnerable.

“We worked very closely with our customers to design and produce a solution which allows for a ‘stack, drop and go’ approach that is more time efficient, more hygienic and frees up time for more deliveries. Our sustainably designed solution is also fully recyclable at home.

“I’m extremely proud of the whole team at DS Smith; their determination to support these initiatives meant that we delivered a new design in under 24 hours. This was subsequently prototyped, tested, manufactured and delivered in less than a week.”
