Cardiff Blues trio called into Wales squad

A trio of Cardiff Blues stars have been called into Wales’ Guinness 6 Nations squad following a bruising opening victory over Ireland on Sunday.

James Botham, Lloyd Williams and Willis Halaholo have all been added to Wayne Pivac’s Championship squad as he continues to count the cost of a slender victory in Round One.

Dan Lydiate, Tomos Williams, Johnny Williams and Hallam Amos all picked up injuries in the Principality Stadium encounter and join the likes of Jonathan Davies on the treatment table.

Both Botham and Williams were unfortunate to miss out on selection initially after impressing through the Autumn Nations Cup following similar call-ups.

Botham made his debut against Georgia and held onto a starting jersey throughout the remainder of the Championship with two further Tests, while Williams also added three to his 31 Test match tally.

It is also a deserved call-up for Halaholo, who was selected by Pivac in 2019, only for a knee ligament injury to end his hopes. The hot-stepping centre returned to action earlier this season before a second operation was requires, however he has regained familiar form in recent weeks.

Halaholo starred during back-to-back victories over the Scarlets, scoring a crucial try at the Cardiff City Stadium.
