Cardiff Blues Premiership Select secure win

4th November 2015

Cardiff Blues Premiership Select (CBPS) produced an impressive debut display as they ran out convincing 43-13 winners over the Ospreys Premiership Select (OPS) in a friendly at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park.

The CBPS will compete in the British & Irish Cup from this season, with the opening game next weekend on home soil against Nottingham.

And this was the ideal warm-up as the home side ran in six tries after overcoming a slow start with Ben Roach (2), Lewis Jones, Chris Didomidis, Macauley Cook and Jevon Groves all crossing the whitewash.

A bright start from the CBPS saw Jarrod Evans look to pull the early strings at fly half and he nearly released Owen Jenkins into space to run clear down the right wing.

However, it was two penalties from the boot of Joel Matavesi that opened the scoring and moved the OPS into a 6-0 lead.

The opening try of the night came after alert play from Roach as he picked off a loose lineout throw and burrowed over, with Evans adding the difficult conversion for a lead the home side would never surrender.

Lewis Jones came close to scoring after strong forward play from Seb Davies and Liam Belcher before Dicomidis crashed over for a 14-6 advantage.

The OPS hit back with a breakaway score from Martin Robterts, but the response was decisive.

Fly half Evans broke into space, reversed a neat pass to Jenkins who drew the final man and popped a pass to scrum half Jones to tear over for a classy effort. The architect, Evans, added the conversion for a 21-13 lead at the break.

Another Evans kick after the break extended the lead, after a superb run saw Dillon Lewis break clear, before full back Rhun Williams nearly set Jenkins free after finding space down the right wing.

Visiting wing Keelan Giles was yellow carded for a deliberate knock on and the resulting lineout was driven over with Cook dotting down as the flow of points started to build for a home side now in complete control up front.

Forward power and neat handling sent Roach over for his second of the night before captain Groves completed the scoring the end a hugely encouraging first display for the CBPS.
