Cardiff Blues Go Pink

5th September 2008

Cardiff Blues stars today launched the club’s new alternate shirt for the 2008/09 season...and it’s PINK!

The striking new shirt will be a big hit with the fans, particularly the increasing number of female supporters attending the Arms Park.

The fuschia pink shirt is not just good to look at, it has also been designed to meet the demanding requirements of first class rugby. The combination of the blue home shirt and the new pink alternative also lends itself perfectly to highlight the Regions’ nominated charity this season, Cancer Research Wales.  This is further demonstrated by the inclusion on the charity’s Pink and Blue logo on the foot of the alternative team jersey as well as all replica jerseys.

Cardiff Blues chief executive Robert Norster said:

“The shirt looks fantastic and the boys will get their first chance to wear it in our game against Ulster at the Arms Park on Friday 12th of September. We are delighted to have Cancer Research Wales as our chosen charity of the coming season. The Pink and Blue link is a perfect fit for both us and the charity with the strong new colour ensuring we will avoid too many kit clashes that are so common in today’s game. The players have already promoted what is a most worthy charitable cause fighting an illness that has touched most of our lives in some way.”

The launch of new shirt coincides with Cancer Research Wales Cardiff Pink and Blue Walk. The walk, this Sunday (7 September) starting at 11.00am from the Norwegian Church and takes in the fantastic sights of the Cardiff Bay Barrage.

The walk aims to raise funds and awareness for breast and prostate cancer; two of the most common cancers affecting men and women in Wales.

Among the people taking part in the walk will be sisters Zoe Thompson and Carly Morgan who will be walking in memory of their dad Tom who was an avid Blues supporter and regular at Cardiff Arms Park.

The sisters were presented with their own pink shirts, which they will wear with pride on Sunday.

Cancer Research Wales is currently funding cutting edge research into these two cancers in its laboratories at Velindre Hospital in Cardiff and this year’s walk will raise funds to help continue and develop this research.

Speaking of the new pink shirts, Cardiff Blues player Nicky Robinson said: “The kit feels really great. It’s the same style as our blue shirt the only difference is that its pink and it’s a great way for fans to show support for the Cancer Research Wales’ Cardiff Pink and Blue walk.”

Speaking of the new partnership with the Cardiff Blues, Liz Andrews, Deputy Charity Director for Fundraising at Cancer Research Wales said: “We are extremely happy to be associated with the Cardiff Blues, and are elated that they are helping to promote our Pink and Blue walk.

“There’s always such a great atmosphere on the Pink and Blue walk. Everyone has a great time while raising much needed funds for Cancer Research Wales.”

This 4 mile Pink and Blue walk starts at 11.00am at the Norwegian Church, Cardiff Bay. To register please download a registration form on http://www.cancerresearchwales.co.uk/ or contact Cancer Research Wales on 029 2031 6976
