27th January 2006

Blues got off to a positive start when newly appointed Captain for the match, Xavier Rush, chose to kick for the corner from a penalty and a clean win in the line out saw the home side coming close to scoring. However, the Edinburgh defence was solid and they turned the Blues over and cleared their line. It was the visiting side who got the first score when they won a penalty that Duncan Hodge converted. They nearly scored again but for some last ditch defence on the Cardiff Blues try line, however the score came soon after when referee George Clancy missed a knock-on by Hodge and scrum half Rory Lawson gathered the ball and slotted a drop goal. The referee did however award the Blues a penalty after Edinburgh once again drifted offside and Lee Thomas slotted the kick. A period of pressure followed from the Blues with excellent commitment from the forwards and the lineout working well, however they failed to gain any more points in the first half and the teams went in on the break Cardiff Blues 3 Edinburgh Gunners 6
