Brace of tries was a bittersweet consolation for Lane

14th January 2019

Owen Lane admits his two tries at Scotstoun Stadium was a bittersweet consolation as his side were edged out by Glasgow Warriors in Sunday's Heineken Champions Cup.

The wing made his first start for the region since recovering from a hamstring injury, which has kept him on the sidelines since October.

Josh Navidi and Harri Millard also crossed the whitewash in Glasgow to earn their side a bonus point, but the hosts proved too strong for Wales’ Capital Region, as they kept their quarter final hopes alive.

Lane was encouraged by aspects of Cardiff Blues’ performance, but has called on his side to be more consistent in order to secure results in the future.

“I’m obviously happy to get over the line and score some tries, but it’s a little bit bittersweet in reality because it was a disappointing result for us as a team,” said Lane.

“There were a lot of positives to take from the game and our attacking shape was good in parts of the game.

“We performed well in parts but switched off during crucial moments and that’s what let us down on the day. We weren’t consistent enough.

“I’m not sure how clear it was for people watching, but it was a very difficult first half, playing against that wind and it was tough to get out of our half.

“In the second half, our discipline let us down because Glasgow managed to get out of their half through our mistakes.

“That really cost us in the end because we were putting the pressure back on ourselves and six penalties on the bounce after the break really didn’t help our case.

“The inside backs made it easier for myself and they were getting around the sides and making breaks, and I thought Harri Millard played very well.

“But we have to be consistent with it and put in a performance for the full 80 minutes, and we didn’t manage to do that against Glasgow.

“We built momentum and scored some tries but were then losing the kick off and putting the pressure back on ourselves.”

Warren Gatland will be naming his squad for the 2019 Guinness Six Nations on Tuesday, but Lane is keen to keep his feet firmly on the ground and not get distracted from his regional duties.

The under-20 international said: “This is my first game back, and my aim at the moment is to get fit, because that selection is out of my hands.

“Obviously I would love to play for Wales, because every player in the country wants to do that, but I can’t focus on that at the moment.

“If I can keep getting into the Blues side and perform consistently, then hopefully I will get a chance, and that’s all I can ask for.

“Hopefully I’ll be involved against Lyon over the weekend, but I’ve just completed my first full 80 minutes so I was tired, but I just want to build on that at the moment.”
