Boss plans to finish pool stages on high

19th January 2016

Danny Wilson has challenged Cardiff Blues to finish the pool stages of the European Challenge Cup on a high when they face Rugby Calvisano at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on Friday night (kick-off 7.45pm).

Cardiff Blues stormed back to claim a try bonus point against Harlequins in London last weekend.

That means qualification matters are out of the hands of Cardiff Blues who must wait on other results and claim a win over the Italians.

But, no matter what the outcome, Wilson is keen for his men to finish the pool with a bang and build momentum before a return to Guinness PRO12 action.

“What we need to do against Calvisano is show improvement - start well and finish with the same passion as we did at Quins to get a win at home,” he said.

“After that we have Edinburgh which is a big game for us so it’s a big couple of games.

“We’re trying to build something here and we are going to have bumps in the road at times. The first half in London was a bump in the road while the second half was a far better performance.”

Wilson admits there will almost certainly be changes to his line-up as he manages the quick turnaround between games and also injuries sustained in London.

He said: “We are into a five-day turnaround between games; which is the hardest and shortest turnaround we have with a Sunday to Friday game.

“It will rule a few people out in terms of not recovering from bumps and knocks and we’ve also had two head injuries that we will have to assess.

“There will probably be some changes that are forced and then we have got to decide who we want to look at as we start to prepare for that all-important game with Edinburgh.

“We take huge confidence from the Quins game,” he added. “We have been criticised in the past for not fighting and showing character. We are showing that in abundance at the moment and that gives us the ability to keep building.”
