Allen - We must maintain momentum

7th September 2016

Cory Allen insists Cardiff Blues must carry momentum from last weekend's bonus point victory against Edinburgh into Friday night's clash with Munster.

The Welsh international centre played a full 80 minutes in the 34-16 opening day win over their Scottish opponents.

Munster also picked up a win, securing a 23-13 victory on their visit to the Scarlets, and Allen is well aware of the challenge they present  in front of their home support.

Allen said: “It was a good start to the season against Edinburgh. For the backs, the conditions weren’t ideal, but the forwards stepped up to put in an incredible performance, especially players like Nick Williams and Ellis Jenkins.

“A home bonus point victory was the start we needed. We’re looking forward now to carrying that momentum into the Munster game on Friday.

“Munster also had a good start to the season with an away win at the Scarlets. They may have a few internationals returning this weekend, we don’t know yet. If not, they are still a strong side.

“They’ve sold a lot of tickets for the game, so the crowd will be a factor. But as long as we go there concentrating on our own game and pick up where we left off against Edinburgh, I’m confident we can come home with a win.”

Danny Wilson has spoken in the build up to Friday’s match about the competition for places currently in the Cardiff Blues’ squad, and Allen is adamant that it’s had a positive effect on the players’ attitude.

“I agree with Danny, there are competition for places in every position, which is a good thing. There’s pressure on everyone - if you don’t play well, you’re out of the team.”

“Someone is ready to step up and take your place. It keeps everyone on their toes, but also keeps options to rotate the squad and keep everyone fresh during a long season.”
