Cardiff Blues to host Leicester Tigers in pre-season

1st June 2018

Cardiff Blues will kick-off their pre-season preparations with a home clash against Leicester Tigers on Saturday, August 11 (2.30pm).

The encounter will be the first under new head coach John Mulvihill, who arrives at Cardiff Arms Park later this month, and the first of two friendlies ahead of the 2018-19 season.

Following the home encounter, the Blues will travel to face Exeter Chiefs, who they beat ahead of last season, at Sandy Park on Saturday, August 18.

Mulvihill said: “We are delighted to test ourselves against two of the best teams in the Premiership at the end of our pre-season.

“The Leicester game at Cardiff Arms Park should be a celebration of the old and introduction to the new. It will be a great occasion for our supporters to feel the energy of the new season and the challenges ahead.

“This will be the first chance to gauge where we are physically, mentally and as a team. We will need to find our hard edge early ahead of the season.

“Pre-season games are all about getting our boys back into the physical battle, they are about trying new things, improving old ways and putting ourselves under pressure and out of our comfort zone. We are committed to be ready for the challenge early this season.”

Mulvihill recently spent a week in Cardiff, where he met key personnel across the business ahead of his move from the Gold Coast in Australia.

He added: “Although I don't start until mid-June I was fortunate enough to spend a week in Cardiff recently meeting all of the heads of departments and speaking to a number of players about the new season.

“It's important we build on the momentum generated over the past few months by the group and continue to improve all areas both on and off the field.

“I am very much looking forward to getting over to Cardiff and working with this exciting group of players and staff.”
