Anscombe raring to go for Judgement Day

27th April 2018

Gareth Anscombe is raring to go ahead of a "massive occasion", as Cardiff Blues prepare for the Judgement Day clash against Ospreys on Saturday.

The outside half will captain his side at the Principality Stadium, as the Guinness PRO14 campaign draws to a close.

The Welsh international was a stand-out performer in this fixture last season, as Danny Wilson’s side claimed a bonus point win over their Welsh rivals, with Anscombe claiming a stunning individual score.

Ahead of the Challenge Cup final encounter against Gloucester in two weeks time, Anscombe believes the derby clash is another opportunity to play in front of a big crowd and continue the recent momentum before the trip to Bilbao.

Anscombe said: “There’s a chance for a lot of boys to get game-time and try to keep the ball rolling. We’ve hit a purple patch recently and have another big occasion to back up last week and it would be nice to finish the season with a win, before we look ahead to Gloucester in a couple of weeks.

“It’s what we’ve spoken about all week. We need to get stuck in and make sure we don’t leave any questions unanswered.

“The boys are really excited for this one. There are a few of them that haven’t experienced playing here before and it will be a good occasion for them.

“It’s a chance for them to enjoy the day, enjoy playing in front of family and friends and give it a real good crack.

“The Arms Park had 12,000 in it last week for the semi final, and it was packed and loud. The atmosphere there was fantastic, and the last few Judgement Days have been awesome in that sense, and we’re expecting another big crowd tomorrow.

“Hopefully the sun will be shining and people will walk down to the stadium. These are the occasions that you work hard over the summer for. It’s exciting.”

Wilson has made 13 changes from the European semi final victory over Pau, while Ospreys have named an experienced side for Saturday’s match.

Anscombe insists last year’s Judgement Day victory was amongst his highlights at the national stadium, and he is excited for the match-ups across the field this time around.

“Judgement Day last season was a special one. It was a game that we had built up towards for a while and we had a really clinical performance for the first 60 minutes,” said Anscombe.

“It would be right up there with my personal highlights at the Principality Stadium. It was a fantastic occasion in front of close to a sell-out crowd.

“We’ve got a good rivalry with Ospreys. They’re one hell of a team on their day and it will take a big effort from us to get the win tomorrow.

“But we’re excited for the challenge, there’s confidence within the group and we’re looking forward to it.

“I’ll be up against Biggar who is a great competitor, and it’s always nice to have those little match-ups.

“They’ve got a lot of Lions boys in that team, and a big pack with lots of experience in it. They’ll be used to playing here so it will be a big challenge.

“There’s a lot of internationals playing, and it’s nice to play well in these big games."
