Cardiff Blues confirm Jason Strange appointment

9th April 2018

Cardiff Blues are pleased to confirm Jason Strange will join the region as Backs and Attack coach ahead of the 2018-19 season.

The Wales Under-20s head coach is the first addition to John Mulvihill’s new coaching staff at Cardiff Arms Park.

Strange comes with an excellent reputation as one of the most exciting young coaches in Wales and has worked closely with a host of Cardiff Blues young stars.

He guided Wales Under-20s to a Six Nations Grand Slam in 2016, with the likes of Rhun Williams and Dillon Lewis star performers, and is now looking forward to the next step in his career.

Strange said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed the last four years with Wales Under-20s. I have some great memories and it’s been a huge honour to watch players go on to earn senior professional contracts and full international honours.

“It’s been a great experience for me as a coach and now is the right time to take the next step. I have gained valuable experience with Ebbw Vale and Wales Under-20s and the natural progression is into the day-to-day professional environment with Cardiff Blues.

“It’s a very talented squad and the exciting thing is it hasn’t reached its peak, there’s still a lot of growth and I’m confident they can achieve great things both collectively and individually.

“I have worked with a lot of the boys previously and I’m really excited by the long-term vision the Blues and John Mulvihill have set out.”

More than 10 of the Cardiff Blues first team and senior academy squad have worked with Strange at Under-20s level and in the last two years eight players have graduated from that set-up to full international honours.

The former fly-half also gained valuable coaching experience at senior international level last autumn while on secondment with Canada.

And Cardiff Blues’ incoming head coach John Mulvihill, is excited about the addition, as he continues to build his back-room team.

He added: “Jason Strange is an exciting addition to our coaching group, he possesses excellent rugby intellect and for many years has been involved in developing Welsh players of the future.

“He is an ambitious, detailed and driven coach who is excited about the opportunity but also aware of his responsibility to create a point of difference with our backline and team attack.

“Just like players, coaches also need the chance to fulfill their potential and I believe that Jason will do this successfully at the Cardiff Blues.

“Jason has history with many of our younger players. I look forward to assisting Jason building on these foundations, strengthening relationships and trust within the group and developing an aggressive attacking mindset that gives energy and excitement to our team and supporters.”
