Scully reacts to Try of the Season accolade

9th June 2017

Blaine Scully has paid tribute to Cardiff Blues supporters, staff and players after his stunning finish against Scarlets was voted the Cardiff Blues Heineken Try of the Season.

Scully’s score in the October derby at Cardiff Arms Park came out on top of a public vote, seeing off competition from Gareth Anscombe, Dan Fish, Tomos Williams and Sion Bennett.

The USA co-captain has become a fan favourite at Wales’ Capital Region this season, and pinpointed the try as one of his personal highlights of the campaign.

“I was obviously really grateful to receive the award, but most importantly I would like to thank the supporters, my teammates and staff who are a key part of all of it,” said Scully.

“It’s pretty cool, as I didn’t know that it was voted by almost a 1,000 fans, and it’s great to be supported by our amazing supporters.

“The try came off a scrum set piece in the opposition 22, and it was a great ball over the top by Jarrod.

“All I had to do was collect it up and take off a little bit before the line, jump over a couple of guys and put it down, so it was a pretty cool highlight.

“Those moments are funny, because they tend to speed up and slow down at the same time. I was pretty buzzed in the moment after touching it down and I saw a couple of supporters in the crowd and gave them some love.

“It’s fun to play the game, I enjoy playing the game and moments like that are what you live for. I was up against some really good team tries, and I feel lucky to have won.

“The main thing for me is always feeling fortunate to be a part of the club and part of this team with so many good people. It’s been a really memorable season.”

Scully suffered an elbow injury during April’s 24-24 draw against Ulster at Kingspan Stadium, which kept him out for the rest of the season.

The USA international is currently undergoing rehab, and is itching to get back to action with Cardiff Blues for the 2017/18 season.

Scully said: “I’m coming along really well now - I’m out of the brace now, fully functional and started rehab.

“It’s a really humbling experience, to start at 2.5kg and work yourself all the way up. Thankfully we have a really good physio team and medical department so I’ll be fit in no time.

“I will still be at the Cardiff Blues training ground for another week and a half, doing some rehab and getting the elbow in a good place. Then I’ll jet off to join the USA national team and support them in any way I can during the World Cup qualifier.

“From then I’ll have a couple of weeks home in California and then come back and look to hit the ground running for pre-season for what will be an exciting year.”
