Bennett rewarded with Cardiff Blues contract

24th April 2017

Sion Bennett will remain at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park next season after agreeing a long-term deal with the region.

The versatile back-row forward joined Cardiff Blues on a short-term contract as injury cover in February.

And following a string of impressive performances, which have included three tries, the 23-year-old has earned a new contract.

Cardiff Blues head coach Danny Wilson said: “It great to bring Sion back to Wales. He has worked hard since arriving at Cardiff Blues and has performed well on the field when selected.

“He adds depth to a position that will be very competitive if everyone stays fit.”

Bennett, who linked up with the Blues from Northampton Saints, came through the ranks at the Scarlets while Wilson was forwards coach and was also under his tutelage with Wales Under-20s.

He admits his switch to Wales’ Capital Region could not have gone better and he is delighted to extend his stay.

Now he is determined to battle for a starting spot in a hugely competitive back-row at Cardiff Arms Park.

Bennett said: “I came here to play rugby and it could not have gone any better. I’m really happy to have signed a new contract.

“I was getting quite frustrated at Northampton. When you are a rugby player that’s what you want to be doing, playing rugby.

“The chance came up to come to Cardiff Blues and to work with Danny and a few boys I had played with and against previously. I played more than I ever expected and now I just want to help the team however I can.

“I was with Danny with Wales Under-20s and he was at the Scarlets as I was coming through. I worked well with Danny and felt he got the best out of me.

“Looking ahead I just want a massive pre-season and next year I want that starting sport. That’s what everyone wants, I will do whatever the team needs but that’s what I am striving for.”
