Two-try Tomos sets sights on Gloucester

26th March 2017

Tomos Williams was thrilled to bag two tries in a slender Guinness PRO12 defeat to Leinster and believes Cardiff Blues can now enter their European Challenge Cup quarter-final against Gloucester with confidence.

The electric scrum-half finished two of three stunning counter-attacking tries as the Blues went down fighting at the RDS in Dublin.

It was a performance to be proud of ahead of a season-defining clash with the Cherry and Whites next Saturday and Williams reckons his side can take confidence.

He said: “It was a good performance in patches but there is still stuff we have to work on and we had a couple of chances to win at the end. Maybe if we had taken them we would have won in the end.

“We have some dangerous boys with ball in hand, especially when it breaks up and we get counter attack opportunities. We took those chances very well.

“We just need to tidy a few things up, a bit of execution and hopefully we will take us into a good performance against Gloucester next week.

“It’s now a big week, we have to get our heads down and work hard in training. Cup rugby is always good and if we can get some silverware out of this season it will be a real positive.”

Both of Williams’ tries came from well inside Cardiff Blues’ own half – first following a turnover and some slick inter-play and then some neat footwork from Gareth Anscombe and a burst of pace from Kristian Dacey.

It had been his seventh start of the season and first in the PRO12 since the turn of the year, with namesake scrum-half Lloyd Williams often taking on the captaincy duties, and he thoroughly enjoyed the occasion.

Williams added: “It’s good to get a run out, it’s a good place to come and enjoyable to play in a venue like the RDS.

“It’s always nice to score and get on the scoreboard. The boys did the hard work – Nipper (Matthew Morgan), Blaine (Scully) and Rey (Lee-Lo) with good hands for the first try and Dacey did well for the second.”
