Wilson takes the positives from frustrating loss

4th March 2017

Danny Wilson has taken the positives from a "frustrating" and "disappointing" defeat to Munster at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park.

Cardiff Blues led 6-3 at the interval but it proved too little after Munster enjoyed the advantage of a strong wind after the break.

An Aled Summerhill try saw the home side stretch their lead to 11-3 but Munster quickly hit back through Francis Saili.

They remained camped in Blues territory for the remainder of the game and eventually turned pressure into points with a drop-goal before striking with a late try.

Wilson said: “It’s frustrating and disappointing. As you saw the game unfold, we didn’t get enough from the first half when we had the conditions.

“Three (points) with the wind behind you isn’t enough against Munster. They are the kind of conditions Munster thrive in.

“It became a game where we were stuck in our own third and we couldn’t get out. We defended heroically at times, we took away areas of Munster’s game that they thrive on -  we dealt with their driving lineout and their scrum, we even dealt with their carrying game.

“But we didn’t manage to get any territory, their kicking game was better than ours and we got stuck in our own third. In two moments, with two scores, the game looks very different to the way it did with eight minutes to go.

“The major disappointment is we have come away from the game with nothing and after 72 minutes I thought we deserved more than that but those are the breaks.”

The defeat is a major blow to the Blues hopes of a top six finish in the PRO12 but Wilson insists they will fight until the bitter end.

He added: “Mathematically we can still achieve that top six place but the reality is it will be very tough for us and we need other results to go our way.

“We’ve got some big games ahead of us – Leinster away, Ulster away – so it’s a tough one for us. We knew the importance of winning three out of four and we’ve only won two out of four.”
