Wilson ready for latest must win encounter

2nd March 2017

Danny Wilson has rallied his Cardiff Blues team ahead of a "massive" clash with Munster at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on Saturday (5.15pm).

The Blues head coach set his side the target of at least three wins from four in the current block of Guinness PRO12 matches and with two wins and one defeat so far, he knows they must topple the Irish province.

A stunning performance at Irish Independent Park earlier this season saw, Cardiff claim a victory on the road against Munster and following two consecutive wins, Wilson believes his side are picking up some much-needed confidence.

He said: “We targeted three wins out of four games. We slipped up in the first game against Connacht at home, which has put a bit of pressure on this last one against Munster.

“Now we really want to achieve that goal and objective to give ourselves the opportunity to be in that top six.

“We know it’s tight and tough to stay in touch with the top six but we remain motivated to finish the season in that position.

“We’ve dropped one or two games at home which we’ve been really disappointed with when compared to last season, but we’ve certainly improved our away record and Friday night resembled that.

“There was a big commitment and fight from the boys, in the latter stages of what was a really tight game, to get over the line and hopefully we can carry that into a big game against Munster.”

Wilson’s side triumphed over Munster at Irish Independent Park as they kicked-off the PRO12 season with four consecutive wins.

The Blues have not completed a double over Munster since the 2007-08 season and Rassie Erasmus’ side will be fired up after they lost at home to the Scarlets, their first defeat at Thomond Park in any competition this season.

Wilson expects a daunting challenge and a formidable set-piece from the Irish province but reckons his side can go into the encounter with some confidence.

He continued: “We can draw some confidence from the fact that we went to Munster earlier in the season and won.

“It’s a great challenge to try to secure the double over Munster, and something which doesn’t present itself season in, season out, and we have that opportunity over the weekend.

“Munster have been very good all season on both sides of the ball. Their defensive record has been superb and they can really put you under pressure with their power game and their set piece game, so those are areas we need to be on top of if we want to come away with a win.”
