Smith and Evans sign new contracts

22nd February 2017

Cardiff Blues are pleased to announce new deals for young backline duo Jarrod Evans and Garyn Smith.

Following the likes of fellow local products Sam Warburton, Gethin Jenkins, Tom James, Dillon Lewis and Ethan Lewis this season, they have both committed their long-term futures to the region.

The duo have already played more than a decade of rugby together, having come through the Pontypridd schoolboy ranks and into the Blues academy, and they will continue their long association with each other at Wales’ Capital Region.

Smith has become a regular presence in the Blues midfield since making his debut in 2014 and enjoyed a breakthrough campaign last year.

He featured in 14 matches and has already turned out for the region on 10 occasions so far this season.

Smith, 21, said: “I’m really pleased to get the new contract sorted. I’m happy with the progress I’m making at Cardiff Blues and have been involved a lot this season.

“There is a lot of competition for centre places and that is only good – it drives me on and I’m also learning from the other boys.

“It’s an enjoyable environment and I’m confident we are heading in the right direction and compete for top six places. It also ties in nicely with my university studies.”

Fly-half Evans, who has made 20 appearances for the Blues, is one of the most highly-rated youngsters in Wales.

Having progressed through the Blues academy, he penned his first senior contract in January 2015 and went on to feature in consecutive Junior World Championships.

Evans said: “I’m really pleased to sign again. I’ve been with Cardiff Blues since I started and I’m really looking forward to what the next few years hold.

“The coaches here really know their stuff and that’s had a big influence on my decision. I learnt a lot last year from Danny and I’m picking up more with Matt Sherratt coming in as well.

“It’s been a frustrating season because of injury but I’m now looking forward playing my part for the remainder and beyond.”

Head coach Danny Wilson added: “They are both young and exciting players who have big futures at Cardiff Blues.

“They are both very hard-working, diligent and dedicated players. Jarrod brings an exciting attacking game and good distribution and Garyn is very strong and an effective defender.

“There are is still plenty for them to learn but they can certainly go a long way if they continue their progress here.”
