Anscombe fired up for four crucial games

9th February 2017

Gareth Anscombe is excited to be fit and firing as Cardiff Blues prepare for a crucial block of Guinness PRO12 matches.

Danny Wilson’s men will look to close the gap on the top six in the Guinness PRO12. They are currently in seventh place, six points adrift of Ulster, who are sixth.

But Anscombe believes the next block of fixtures, starting with Connacht on Sunday, could build momentum and confidence within the squad as they attempt to qualify for the European Champions Cup.

Anscombe said: “We really need to start winning. If we can grab a couple of wins, we can really shake up this table. We’ve got belief in the squad we can do that and I’m just happy to be back and hope I can contribute to some good team performances.

“I’ve got a chance now to play some consistent footy in a Cardiff Blues jersey. I’m looking forward to getting stuck in with the boys here and get a few wins.

“If we can do that, there will be more positivity around the club, with the team going in the right direction, and hopefully we can get back up that table.

“We’re obviously a few points behind but we’ve got a couple of big games coming up, and if we come out on the right side of that we might end up in a decent position."

The fly-half also outlined his relief to be back in action for Cardiff Blues, following a frustrating groin injury that required surgery.

The outside half made a try-scoring return during the Blues’ 37-21 victory over Bristol Rugby in the European Challenge Cup last month.

“I wouldn’t say it’s 100 per cent yet, but it’s feeling a lot better. It’s been a little bit of a slow process, but it’s feeling more comfortable each week,” said Anscombe.

“We’re not quite there just yet but it’s nice to be back running around with the boys.

““As long as I can have a big second half of the season, and play the rest of the games for Cardiff Blues, then we’ll see what happens. It’s nice being back in a Cardiff Blues jersey for what’s going to be a tough part of the season for us.”
