Williams inspired by Wilson half-time talk

9th May 2016

Lloyd Williams has revealed some half-time words of wisdom from Danny Wilson inspired Cardiff Blues to their comeback victory over Edinburgh.

Wales’ Capital Region trailed 17-7 at the break despite Rey Lee-Lo’s try at Murrayfield.

But Wilson’s men dominated the second-half and claimed further tries through Cam Dolan and Garyn Smith to finish the season on a high.

Williams said: “There were some stern words from Danny and Gethin (Jenkins).

“Throughout the season we have been in places like that at half-time and been behind but we knew it was within us to come back and win and that’s exactly what we did.

“We changed a bit of our game and adapted to how Edinburgh were playing and I’m pleased with the way we finished.

“I was really worried we hadn’t turned up and Edinburgh were showing why they have been pushing for a top spot.

“It was important we got back in the game and we were only 10-points down at half-time.

“It was a case of territory and building pressure and I thought our forwards really stepped up. We really concentrated on the breakdown, our kick chase and it paid off.”

The victory at Murrayfield ensured the Blues finished the Guinness PRO12 season in seventh place.

And while there is disappointment at failing to secure European Champions Cup rugby, Williams is optimistic about the future at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park.

He added: “Our season has been a bit like the Edinburgh game in a nutshell, we started slow but finished strong.

“It’s important that we start with a bang next year to give us a chance at the end of the season.

“We have shown what we are capable of, it took a while to adapt to the game plan but now I’m really pleased with what we have to build on.

“Everyone is looking forward to next season, but we will enjoy some time off and come pre-season we will look at how we can move on with some new personnel coming in.”
