Hodges: It's knockout rugby when Exiles visit

14th January 2016

Head Coach Richard Hodges admits the British & Irish Cup campaign is now straight knockout rugby for Cardiff Blues Premiership Select (CBPS) as they prepare to face London Welsh at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 2.45pm).

The CBPS claimed a crucial 18-15 win over Cornish Pirates in December to keep qualification hopes alive with two rounds left.

Hodges and his team now face London Welsh on home soil this Saturday – eager to avenge a late defeat in London last year – before a final day clash away at Nottingham Rugby.

Only victories will do for CBPS as they look to move to the top of Pool  4, but whatever the outcome Hodges admits he has been pleased with the way his young squad has adapted to the new competition this season.

“It’s knockout rugby for us now and we know we can’t afford to lose if we want to progress to the quarter-finals,” he said.

“The team has had to learn quickly this season that English Championship sides play a brand of rugby that is often very different to the Welsh Premiership.

“It has taken us a few games to adjust but we’ve been pleased with the player’s attitude and determination to make our first campaign in the B&I Cup a successful one.

“There will be a number of debuts on Saturday and it’s great to see potential regional players of the future given the chance to impress in this competition.”
