Team ready to tackle 'class act' Quins

15th November 2015

Head Coach Danny Wilson believes his Cardiff Blues will be massively motivated to perform as they return to BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on Thursday night for more European action.

Cardiff Blues welcome English giants Harlequins to the Welsh capital as both teams defend an unbeaten start in the European Rugby Challenge Cup.

Harlequins opened up the pool proceedings with a big 41-16 win over Montpellier in London before Blues went top with a 50-9 victory over Rugby Calvisano in Italy.

Wilson acknowledges it is vital his players recover well with a short turnaround until the televised encounter.

However, he believes his team have it all to play for as they face a team he admits is packed full of international talent.

“I have spoken to the boys and told them the most important thing is that we recover well,” he said.

“We had a three and a half hour flight after the game to get home and a couple of days to get ourselves patched up and ready to go with one main training day, a team run and then the game.

“But we go back to the Arms Park which will give this group big motivation to perform.

“We have to use the relevant time we have got to recover properly for the fixture which, after the performance we saw from Harlequins on Thursday, is going to be a really tough one.

“I thought they showed in patches of that game what they are capable of. Their driving lineout went well and they scored a few good tries.

“Harlequins are a class act from one to 15 and with their bench too; they have internationals and have signed and recruited well to build a powerful squad.

“They play a good offloading game too so they will be a big challenge for us. But these are the games that, as coaches and players, you want to be involved in.”

Reflecting on the opening round win over Rugby Calvisano, Wilson added: “We got a bonus point win on day one which ultimately puts us in a good position to go into Thursday night.

“We have got to keep building our performances. Results will take care of themselves if we perform both in attack and defence to the levels we showed against Calvisano.

“We have done that in patches this season and we know we are capable of getting wins when we are perhaps seen by many as the underdog.”
