Wilson vows to manage World Cup returnees

21st October 2015

Head Coach Danny Wilson has vowed to manage the return of his World Cup stars to ensure they are 'mentally and physically' ready to fire - but revealed new signing Cam Dolan could feature this weekend in Ireland.

Wilson has given Sam Warburton, Gethin Jenkins, Alex Cuthbert and Lloyd Williams time to freshen up after their exploits with Wales.

USA international Blaine Scully and Samoa star Rey Lee-Lo will also not be rushed into action as Cardiff Blues strive to make sure the internationals are ready to have a big impact.

However, Wilson has revealed the home clash with Glasgow Warriors could be the day the Welsh quartet return to BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park.

“We have had a good chat with the Welsh internationals and you have three players – in Sam Warburton, Gethin Jenkins and Alex Cuthbert – who have been on the go since June,” he said.

“We will manage them over the next week or two to give them time to get over the relevant knocks and bruises and come back fresh to us.

“Lloyd Williams has not played as much rugby and hopefully he will be back in next week training with us.

“They have come out of a long block of rugby and are about to go into another long block of rugby. We have got to manage these boys correctly.

“We want them back as soon as possible to get some momentum and get them up to speed with the way we are playing.

“First and foremost they have come out of a World Cup period and we would be foolish not to manage them correctly.

“If we can give them the relevant time to be mentally and physically right for us, that will benefit us and they will embrace the changes.

“They are coming into a new system of play and environment. I’m looking forward to getting them back, but they need to get up to speed with what we are doing.”

However, Wilson did reveal that USA international Dolan was pushing for a debut.

“Cam (Dolan) is definitely in contention to be in the squad this week,” he said. “Blaine (Scully) joins us next week.

“Rey (Lee-Lo) got off a plane last night with his family and has come in today to see us. We’ve all met him and he will go through an assessment period now to make sure he is fit and ready to go. Hopefully we will see him putting a Cardiff Blues jersey in the coming weeks.”
