15th September 2015

Cardiff Blues have teamed up with Alzheimer's Society as charity partners to increase awareness and raise funds to help people live well with dementia today and for research to find a cure for tomorrow.

There are 3,726 people living with dementia in Cardiff and 45,000 people across Wales. Alzheimer’s Society fund services that support people living with dementia, their families and carers. These include day care and home care for people with dementia, as well as support and befriending services to help partners and families cope with the demands of caring.

Richard Holland, Chief Executive at Cardiff Blues, said: "With an ageing population, the number of people with dementia is increasing and it is affecting more and more people.

"Both myself and Cardiff Blues Chairman, Peter Thomas, have personal experiences of family members living with Alzheimer’s, so we know about the excellent work that Alzheimer’s Society do in supporting people with dementia and their families.

"At Cardiff Blues we are delighted to announce the Alzheimer’s Society as one of our chosen charity this season. We look forward to working closely with the Alzheimer’s Society to bring the disease to the forefront of the public's conscious and help generate much-needed funds for such a fantastic cause.

"We are now urging our fans to get behind our campaign this season. Starting with our support of the Memory Walk in Cardiff on September 19, and help us to make a difference in the lives of people dealing with this disease."

Natalie Kell, Senior Regional Corporate Partnership Executive or Alzheimer’s Society in Wales says; “We are delighted to be the chosen charity partner of the Cardiff Blues. Over 40,000 people under 65 have dementia in the UK and we hope that through the partnership we will reach a wider audience and raise awareness of the disease.

“We also want to promote the importance of keeping active as we know that regular exercise can help reduce the risk of dementia and this partnership will be a great way of us spreading that message – starting with our Memory Walks this September!”
