Blues will not rush Patchell return

7th April 2015

Attack Coach Paul John has vowed that Cardiff Blues will not rush the return of Rhys Patchell after his injury against Ulster Rugby.

Patchell was stretchered off in Belfast after suffering concussion and was released from hospital the following day before returning to Wales.

John was pleased to report that Patchell was back at the training base and keen to play a part in the remaining matches this season.

However, he revealed the kicking ace would miss Friday’s trip to Glasgow Warriors as Patchell continues his comeback.

He said: “Rhys hasn’t returned to training yet but he is set to start the return to play protocols next week.

“He’s had a severe knock and we are taking our time and making sure he is okay before we start his return.

“He is back in the environment and he feels good and is about smiling and with the boys, but we have a process that we will follow for Rhys and we have decided to push that back a week.

“It’s about the player’s safety and Rhys has got to feel comfortable coming back to play,” he added. “He is a young boy and when you have a big knock like that he has got to be happy to come back and play.

“We have excellent medical staff here and they always do what is right for the player. They work in conjunction with the player and we all know where we stand. It’s been managed really well.”
