Back row duo pushing for Wales call-up

14th January 2015

Coach Paul John believes dynamic duo Josh Navidi and Josh Turnbull are 'doing everything possible' to win Wales call-ups - insisting Cardiff Blues could ask no more from the back row pair.

Wales name their Six Nations squad on Tuesday and there will be plenty of interest in who gets the nod from Warren Gatland.

And Cardiff Blues will hope to see a number of players win call-ups for the internationals – including back row stars Navidi and Turnbull.

Navidi has been in sensational form all season and earned yet another man-of-the-match award last weekend against champions Leinster Rugby.

Turnbull has shown his adaptability all year as he has operated across the back row and in the second row to win lavish praise from Director of Rugby Mark Hammett.

And Back Coach John admitted his week – ahead of the European date with Rugby Rovigo – that the pair could do no more to force their way into the selector’s minds.

“They are doing everything possible and you couldn’t ask any more of them both,” he said.

“They have been tremendous in our environment; they play well every week and are definitely putting their hands up and getting noticed.

“Obviously the squad gets announced next week and we hope to have a lot of representation; to be fair to both those boys, they couldn’t push anymore and have been simply outstanding.

“Every player who has international aspirations can only play as well as they possibly can. They are doing that for Blues and now it is up to the selectors to make that tough call.

Navidi was at his blistering best last weekend as Leinster dug out a win at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park as he carried 23 times and made 20 tackles.

And John firmly believes the back row – who has played 85 times for Blues – can make the step up.

“Josh gets on with his game, works hard and carries the ball above his weight,” he added.

“He has given us amazing go-forward and his defence, and disrupting possession for the opposition, he has shown in abundance.

“He has had a lot of man-of-the-match performances - can he translate that onto the international stage? There is only one way to find out.

“Josh does it for us week in and week out, but we will have to see on the selection.”
