Davies: We built pressure to gain win

6th October 2013

Director of Rugby Phil Davies praised his team for building the pressure to force home the win as Cardiff Blues secured a 29-12 victory over Edinburg Rugby in the RaboDirect PRO12.

A tight first half was lit up by a try from Alex Cuthbert before Blues really turned it on after the break with 16 unanswered points.

British & Irish Lions wing Cuthbert grabbed a superb second score after a flowing team move from deep and he was only denied his hat-trick by the TMO after looking to dive over late on.

However, Davies was keen to cheer an entire team performance as Blues returned to winning ways in the league at the Arms Park ahead of the European campaign.

He said: “It was a good solid win. I was pleased with the performance, particularly the second half where we built pressure kicking the goals and we scored a couple of tries.

“I was pleased with patience and the build-up. There was a lot of hard work for the tries.

“That Lloyd Williams, Rhys Patchell, Cory Allen and OwenWilliams axis is terrific, they are all young but they have grown together and can be exciting.

“You’ve got to get results in this business, but if you want to win competitions you have got to be able to play a number of ways.

“Our driving game is slowly coming and the second try showed what we are trying ideally to do when we play rugby.

“Sometimes you have got to be more direct to gain results and play the conditions. But I saw glimpses of where I want us to get to.

“We are moving in the right direction, the guys off the field are doing a good job and we are trying to make sure we back that up on it.”
