Davies satisfied by evolution of Blues

13th September 2013

Director of Rugby Phil Davies described the battling 21-10 victory over Connacht as another step forward in the evolution of his Cardiff Blues.

Blues overcame the wet weather and a battling Connacht outfit at the Arms Park thanks to the accurate boot of Rhys Patchell and a second half fight-back.

The result meant Blues celebrated the official opening of the new artificial playing surface in winning fashion.

And Davies was delighted to see his Blues secure a first league win of the campaign.

“I am very satisfied with the result and we were pleased with the performance in the second half,” said the Blues boss.

“We were all frustrated at half-time because we didn’t have any control. In wet conditions we failed to control it.

“We talked to the boys at half-time about getting the big fellas around the corner in the second half and being attritional with our driving lineout and play. It was good game management in the second half to knock the result down.

“In terms of the evolution of the team, it is another step forward. Last year would have been a different story perhaps, so we are pleased with the result and the way we achieved it in the second half.

“The penalty count was high and I am sure Pat (Lam) and Connacht will learn from it as will we; we are always looking to be more disciplined,” he added.

“I thought we were pretty disciplined and stayed on our feet at the breakdown, knew we had to keep the scrum up. We came out of a tough game with Patch kicking well.”

Davies also praised the performance of his pack as they stepped up to the mark second half with a number of eye catching performances.

He said: “Our driving lineout was good and I thought the forwards and their work ethic was excellent. We were pleased with our ability to do what we eventually did.

“The boys that came on did well. You talk about impact and they did some good stuff. Benoit (Bourrust) was good and Lou (Reed) added something to us. It was a 23-man effort tonight so I am pleased with that.”

Davies also believes the tries will come for his second as they battled the elements for a second successive Friday night.

And he was pleased to see British & Irish Lions star wing Alex Cuthbert back in a Cardiff Blues shirt.

“We just need better execution,” he said. “When you look at the opportunities we are creating, it will come.

“We are creating things - that is the most important thing .It is just that execution and a bit of experience.

“I thought our ball control in the second half was much better, as it was last week, and the tries will come.

“It wasn’t our intention to give Cuthy 80 minutes. But with the blood injury we had we kept him on,” admitted Davies.

“It was great to have him back and he will always do something for you and create something. He will get better and better now.”
