Cardiff Blues pay tribute to Cliff Morgan

29th August 2013

Everyone at Cardiff Blues was today saddened to hear the news that former Cardiff RFC player, Wales international and broadcaster Cliff Morgan has passed away aged 83.

Cliff enjoyed a successful career as a mercurial fly-half for Cardiff, joining from school in 1949 and playing 202 times until his retirement in 1958. He also won 29 caps for Wales, his first in 1951, and four Lions caps on the 1955 tour of South Africa.

Cliff later became a respected commentator, writer and head of outside broadcasts for the BBC and will be forever associated with his commentary on the 1973 Barbarians vs. All Blacks match and iconic description of Gareth Edwards’s famous try.

Speaking of the sad news, Cardiff Blues CEO, Richard Holland, said: "Cliff was one of rugby’s greats and true gentlemen, an outstanding player whose exploits are legendary. Off the field he also achieved so much as a much-loved commentator and writer.

“He was a wonderful ambassador for our great sport and Wales. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.”
