12th May 2005

Young rugby stars of the future got their chance to impress their Grand Slam heroes on the day of the recent Millennium Stadium celebrations at a special Under 13s 7 a side tournament held for clubs from all over Cardiff and the Vale.

The tournament was jointly organised by the WRU, Cardiff Blues and Sport.Cardiff, the sports development arm of Cardiff Council and all the teams got the chance to meet Cardiff Blues grand slam squad members John Yapp, Robert Sidoli, Gethin Jenkins and Robin Sowden-Taylor before moving on to join the celebrations in the stadium.

Sport.Cardiff Rugby Development Officer Gruff Rees organised the tournament which was ultimately won by Canton who beat Rhiwbina by three tries to one in the final. Commenting on the event Gruff said “It was great for the youngsters to show off their skills to some of the players who have helped inspire them. The tournament has seen some great rugby and great enthusiasm and I’m sure that many of the children will be hoping to follow in their heroes footsteps in the future.”
