Summer sessions are a big success

18th August 2004

Capital Rugby Development Officer Julian McTavish has been busy again this month with his district ‘B’ under 12, 13 and 14 rugby development programmes.

The weekly development sessions have been taking place at Colcott Sports Centre in Barry and have given aspiring Blues fans the chance to keep there rugby skills up to scratch whilst the schools are on summer recess.

Commenting on the programme, Julian said, “It’s great to be running rugby development programmes throughout the summer as it gives the youngsters a pre season of their own which will hopefully stand them in good stead for the season ahead. The kids that we have here are all ambitious and have come down to the training sessions off their own back; to me this demonstrates their eagerness to learn.”

As well as the rugby development programmes Julian has also organised positional master classes which gave him the chance to run focus coaching sessions for, hookers, props and 2nd rows, back row and half backs and finally centre’s and back three’s

The sessions have, and will continue to, run over a course of three weeks which therefore will see each player receive over 9 hours of coaching from accredited WRU coaches.

The pinnacle of the courses is a trial and selection day which will see players who have shown the most enthusiasm and commitment chosen to attend either the Centre of Excellence classes or the Centre of Development classes on Tuesday 24th August.

Julian added, “Once the coaching sessions have run their course we will be selecting the Vale of Glamorgan District ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams in each age group will be selected for the season ahead.”
