Charity Cricket Match Raises £810 for Cystic Fibrosis

10th July 2004

On Friday 9th July 2004 Penarth Cricket Club entertained a select Rugby XI in a 20 over cricket match with all proceeds going to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust sponsored by David James Solictors.

The Rugby XI won the toss and elected to field with Penarth’s opening batsmen of Richard Skone and Mike Hitchen wouldn’t have looked out of place at Sophia Gardens in a 20/20 game. Wickets fell at regular intervals with only Richard Skone, Gareth Davies, Rhys Goodfellow and Tom Parkinson reaching double figures. The wicket taking by the Rugby XI were Phil Davies 2, Jamie Ringer 2, Julian McTavish 1 with the top wicket taker was Ian Humpage with 3 for 5.

The cricket club eventually scored 101, it must be said that the fielding of the Rugby XI was impeccable and a special mention must go to Leon Andrews who held 3 superb catches, unlike Jamie Ringer and Jamie Robinson put down very simple catches, it was quoted that they both had hands like feet.

The Rugby XI got off to a slow start with Ken Fourie scoring a magnificent 2 which double his score from last year. Young Rhys Goodfellow opened the bowling and cleaned bowled both Ken and Kevin Maddoxs. The Rugby XI continued to score at will with Jamie Robinson 10, Colin Latity 20, Huw Wiltshire 14, Chris Leader 15 and Peter Goodfellow 16 which gave the Rugby XI a great win with 3 overs to spare.

A raffle and auction took place after this tremendous game which raised £810 which has been donated to Cystic Fibrosis. The organiser would like to extend thanks to all who turned up and played, supported and helped to make the day a great success.

Should anyone wish to donate any further proceeds to the Trust then please contact Peter Goodfellow on 02920 701022 and lets look forward to the rematch next year and hopefully to break the £1000 barrier.
