Rugby roadshow breeds new enthusiasm

24th August 2004

The Sport.Cardiff Summer Roadshow came to a close last week after over a month in action.

The Roadshow, which has been taking place at Channel View, Western Leisure Centre and the STAR centre in Splott, has been a huge success and was lauded by Capital Rugby development officer Gruff Rees.

“The Sport.Cardiff Roadshow has been a huge success and has given us a chance to continue the successful work that we have been doing in the schools during the summer holidays. What has been excellent is the fact that the children are all here off there own back which, demonstrates their enthusiasm towards sport.”

The final rugby sessions were held at Western Leisure Centre and the STAR Centre with over 30 children in attendance at each. The children enjoyed a range of activities which included Dragon Skills , TAG Rugby and small sided rugby matches.

The sessions at Western Leisure Centre also served another purpose as it saw the introduction of two new coaches to rugby development in Cardiff, namely Former Wales under 21 cap Geraint Morris and Blues’ under 21 squad captain from last season, Marcus Leach.

Geraint was fortunate to have some previous experience as he has previously assisted the successful Buy as you View scheme in the Valley areas of South Wales.

As a culmination to the Roadshow the children that participated in the day were given t-shirts, rugby balls and certificates which were kindly donated by the Sport.Cardiff.

As well as paying tribute to the Sport.Cardiff Roadshow, Gruff was also quick to point out that its conclusion signalled the start of a new season for Capital Rugby in the schools of the Blues region.

“I’m looking forward to a new season as are all the development officers. With the new boundaries being drawn up and the Blues having an obligation to rugby development in the valleys, I believe that these are exciting times for the development of our National game.”
