bmibaby Award for Outstanding Involvement in Rugby

27th September 2004

When Cardiff Blues Principal Sponsor bmibaby introduced the Tiny’s Choice Award last season its ethos was that recipients should have given ‘Outstanding contribution or participation to grass roots rugby in the Blues region’.

This ethos rang true on Friday evening as John Richards a stalwart of rugby development in the Blues region for over 30 years was recognised for his work.

Just last year John was the Chairman/coach of Cardiff schools under 15 Dewar Shield winning squad, a role in which he previously undertook back in 1974. John is still involved in supply teacher at Llanrumney High School, a school in which he taught for over 20 years but his main work now is as the team manager of the Cardiff Blues U16 South Squad.

On receiving the award John commented, “I’m extremely grateful to be given this award but I must say its not the reason I’ve been coaching for 30 years! I’m excited by the things that are happening in Welsh rugby at the moment and the fact that the Blues have two teams at under16 level indicates the strength we have in the region.”

Development officer Gruff Rees, who nominated John for the award was full of praise for the work that he has contributed.

"The time and effort that John puts in to the support of rugby development in Cardiff is astonishing indeed, his commitment to schools rugby and to the players in his charge has been an inspiration. Furthermore his years of coaching service in Cardiff and at National level (U21), not too mention his crucial current role with the Regional 16's, highlight how valuable John's contribution is to the rugby community."
