Bruiser Gallops to Victory

3rd June 2004

Cardiff Blues mascot Bruiser proved himself to be the fastest mascot in the town as he streaked home in the Chepstow Racecourse Welsh Mascot Derby on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Blues mascot was an 80-1 outsider before the race but proved the bookmakers wrong by defying the odds and bringing the winners’ trophy back to Cardiff Arms Park.

Bruiser beat off the challenge of Spytty the Dog (Newport County F.C.), Rodney the Dragon (Gwent Dragons), Jolly Green Giant (Yeovil Town F.C.) Jack the Slip (Jack Brown Bookmakers), Rockin’ Robin (Swindon Town F.C.), Tommy the Tiger (Newport RFC) Sedge the Field Mouse (Sedgefield Racecourse) and Ozzy the Osprey (Neath-Swansea Ospreys) to secure victory.

The race which is held annually at Chepstow Racecource is just one of a number of mascot races that are held across Britain in the name of charity. Bruiser now looks set to be a major draw for the crowds as his odds for the Sport Relief Mascot Race at the Epsom Derby this weekend have plummeted to 6-1.

As well as ‘wowing’ the crowds at Epsom, Bruiser will also have the privilege of competing in front of Royalty as the Queen will be at the famous race watching and hopefully cheering on Blues favourite Bruiser.

The pictures on the left show Bruiser with the other ‘runners and riders’, in the winners enclosure and receiving his trophy on the winners podium.
