The Voice of Rugby Dinner

3rd December 2010

Bill McLaren was a man who represented all that is best about rugby union. After 50 years in rugby commentary with the BBC, Bill became known as the "The Voice of Rugby" due to the beauty of his tone, the delight of his imaginative phrasing, and the fact he portrayed rugby as we would always wish it to be.

The Voice of Rugby Challenge Dinner - Cardiff Arms Park, Thursday 3rd February 2011, the eve of Wales England

Bill died on the 19th January 2010, after a five year fight with Alzheimer’s. When he died there was an outpouring from the rugby world, royalty and people who had enjoyed his commentaries.

Out of the many tributes, perhaps the most impressive was “No person has done more for the game of rugby in the last 50 years than Bill McLaren”

Funds raised from the Voice of Rugby Challenge Dinner will go towards Cardiff Blues Community Rugby projects. The dinner will be interactive, engaging the audience with a BBC Question of Sport style Challenge which ties in nicely with the sound knowledge of all things Rugby and Sport that Bill McLaren had. The MC and quiz master on the night will ask the audience a round of rugby and sporting trivia questions between each course, with each table of 10 in attendance taking part as a team in the Challenge event.

Cardiff Arms Park will host the event which will be MC’d by Scrum V’s Rick O’Shea and the guest speaker for the night will be Wales and British Lions legend, Scott Quinnell.  Rick O’Shea will invite fellow Celebrity guests and legends to join them on the stage to also ask the questions, engaging the audience further.

The ‘money can’t buy auction’ products will include Bill’s famous ‘Big Sheets,’ which will simply blow you away when you see one of his original copies in terms of the work he put in to these sheets in preparation for his commentaries. Meticulous is an understatement!

This is a unique opportunity to take a table of 10 for what promises to be an unforgettable night for anyone fortunate enough to be there.
