Former sports presenter Bob Humphrys dies

19th August 2008

The former BBC Wales Today sports presenter and lifelong Cardiff RFC supporter Bob Humphrys has died two months after announcing he was suffering from cancer.

Bob was regular at the Arms Park over a number of decades either reporting on the games for the BBC or supporting the Cardiff Blues and Cardiff RFC.

The 56-year-old, who lived in Cardiff, had worked at the BBC for more than 20 years before taking early retirement this year. Humphrys was told about the cancer by his family doctor in May after having chest and shoulder X-rays.

Former Cardiff RFC, Wales and British Lions scrum-half Gareth Edwards paid tribute to Mr Humphrys and remembered how he had enjoyed playing charity soccer alongside him and fellow Wales great Barry John. "He loved those moments," he said. "He would say 'Go on Barry, give me a pass'. It didn't matter whether it was on the floor or over his head. He was so enthusiastic"

Edwards said Bob Humphrys forte had been encapsulating so much sport from the weekend in his short Wales Today bulletins. “I’m very sad indeed to hear the news and our feelings go to his family. He was an excellent journalist and so knowledgeable about rugby,” added Edwards.
