WRU Regional Under 16s Championship Final Tonight

5th March 2008

Blues North under 16s will be hoping to continue their good form this season when they take on the Ospreys in tonight's WRU Reebok Regional Championship final at Sardis Road (kick off 7.15).

Victory for the Ospreys in last week's game between the sides at Llantwit Fardre earned the holders an opportunity to retain the title they won this time last year.

However, having dominated the competition up to the final again this term, the North will start as favourites to carry off the silverware.

Led by the likes of flank forward Thomas Young and outside half Joseph Griffin, the North have been the stand out side this season with half a dozen victories from their eight qualifying mtches.

Blues Regional Performance Manager Gafyn Cooper said, "Blues v Ospreys is always a hotly contested fixture regardless of whether its the first team or age grade so I'm sure tonight's game will be no different.

"Blues North narrowly won away at the Ospreys 6-3 earlier in the season, but then they did manage to gain a victory against us last week. Plus there is added spice as we owe them from last season’s Championship Final.”

WRU high performance manager Mostyn Richards, who has driven forward the competition sice its inception four years ago; said, "All three age group competitions have been very competitive this season and once again, we look forward to another excellent final.

"I think the progress the Blues North have made over the past two seasons in considerable and that being the case, the Ospreys will certainly not take anything for granted. They might be the holders, but they will have seen the strength of the North side this season."

Indeed the North pick from a strong squad, featuring 11 players picked to play for Wales U16s, in Lyon against France in the Four Nations tournament, including the captain of Wales U16s, Sam Campbell.

“The whole squad is really looking forward to the game as they have worked long and hard during the season. We have to approach tonight's game as a one-off match, so the form book really goes out the window. Hopefully we will have that little something extra up our sleeves to claim the title this season” concluded Cooper.
