Cardiff and Ponty have home draws in the Cup

22nd February 2006

The cup dreams of three Blues regional teams were determined in the Konica Minolta Cup Quarter Final draw at the Welsh Rugby Union.

Pontypridd and Builth Wells have been paired together in the last eight whilst Cardiff RFC will be looking forward to their first home tie in the tournament this season when they take on Llandovery.

The clubs last met in the competition in January 1999 when Cardiff beat the Drovers 40-22 at Church Bank. This season’s match has added spice because in a recent Principality Premiership meeting in Llandovery the Blue & Blacks went down 31-39 after being 24 points ahead inside the first half-hour’s play.

Pontypridd, last season's runners up, will face the only non- Principality Premiership side left in the competition.

"Any team left in the cup at this stage deserves to be there and we are just delighted to be at home in the quarter-finals," said Simon King, the Pontypridd Head Coach.

"We will give Builth Wells all the respect they rightly deserve as they are a proud club with a proud cup tradition and we are already looking forward to the day.

"As far as we are concerned we want to put the record straight after the disappointment of last season's final and we also have a fine cup pedigree.

"We have got a young side and the closer we get to the final the better it is for these young players to get quality experience of the big game atmosphere."

Following the completion of the quarter-finals, the future rounds in this year’s competition are scheduled for 22 April (semi-finals) and 6 May (Final at the Millennium Stadium).
